Back to Virtue

by Peter Kreeft

Virtue signifies moral goodness; the practice of moral duties and the conformity of one's life to the moral law. Our primary business in life is not business, or construction work, or sales, or teaching, or even motherhood, but becoming a complete human being. But what is that? There used to be maps, diagrams, pictures, of a complete human being and a very large part of those old maps were about virtues and vices. The practical aim of this book is to help in the restoration of moral habits among the rising generation.

There is a superstition around that traditional virtue is dull. No! Many defenders of virtue have lost the key to the winsomeness of virtue: passion. The ancients could be passionate about virtue. This strikes us as quaint today. God’s virtue seems cold and stern and unlovable, while Satan’s vice seems far more interesting. But when the world is shown, as it was two thousand years ago, that heroic virtue is the most fascinating life in the world, the world will be won. When others see passion, they are fascinated. Most people today are not fascinated with virtue because most people who practice virtue do not do so with passion. An absolute being, an absolute motive, and an absolute hope can alone generate an absolute passion. God, love and Heaven are the three greatest sources of passion possible. We are sitting on a dynamite keg. It exploded once, and changed the world. ISBN: 0-89870-422-7
